water towers

The Bechers’ 224 photographs of watertowers comprise a unique, single minded, even obsessive mission. They were taken from as many as 8 angles, over a period of 25 years, with a stylistic approach so consistent that photographs juxtaposed from the 1950s and 1980s suggest a minute to minute account deadpan portraits of unadorned metal, concrete, and wooden structures.

Always taken in overcast skier, or in the hazy sunlight of industrial zones, these seemingly artless photographs belle the elaborate process and decisions involved in creating them elevating the camera on scaffolds or ladders, waiting for clouds to block the sun, enlisting the cooperation of plant foreman and security guards to remove all signs of human life from the scene.

Divided over three exhibition projects taken place in Sao Paulo, Barcelona, and Amsterdam, Beltrán interviewed a large number of people and collected a variety of personal theories on all kind of subjects. He drew his inspiration from microhistory, a genre in cultural history that focuses on personal stories and apparently minor events, sketching a picture of a culture or mentality of a particular period. ‘Our view of the world is determined not just by what we have learned about the world or even what we have actually experienced,’ Beltrán explains. ‘It consists to a large extent of suspicions, makeshift connections and personal interpretations.’ With an introduction by Anke Bangma. Design: Erick Beltrán with Gabrielle Pauty and Roger Willems.

Kenneth Goldsmith
The Weather
Make Now Press, 2005
120 p.
Language: English
ISBN: 978-0974355429

Poetry. “Kenneth Goldsmith is without doubt the leading conceptual poet of this time. His poetry, which draws from Fluxus, Dada, and conceptual art traditions, is clever and self aware. With now classics such as FIDGET, SOLILOQUY, and DAY (all available from SPD), he has made poetry out of the mundane and when reading his work one is forced to reconsider the stakes and the measurements of aesthetic practice. THE WEATHER, a collection of weather reports, is one more test of poetry. And what is most striking about this book is that it aces the test. There is something wonderfully celebratory and shockingly pleasant and stimulatingly interesting about reading day after day of weather gone by”–Juliana Spahr.
